And one of my very good friends, Miriam Buhr, shared with the group the POWER of a MANIFESTO.

In case you’re not clear as to what exactly a MANIFESTO is…no worries!

In a nutshell, it’s a PUBLIC (or private) declaration of WHO you are and HOW you see
yourself, WHAT you believe in, WHY you do the things you do, WHERE you’re going in life.

During our Mastermind session, my wheels started spinning and I absolutely LOVED the idea!

So immediately afterwards, I asked myself… “Shelly, WHO ARE YOU? WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR? WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?  WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN?”

And almost instantly thoughts started coming to me… and as quick as they came, I started writing them down.

I waited a few days until I FELT good about everything I had written and went to work on constructing my MANIFESTO.

Actually wasn’t sure I was going to go PUBLIC with it…

But asked myself, “WHY the HELL NOT?”

Couldn’t come up with a reason not to share… so VOILA… my MANIFESTO!

In closing… I have a few questions for you…

WHO are you?  WHAT do you believe in?  HOW do you see yourself?  WHY do you do the things you do?

How To Be A Network Marketing Crusader

Here’s how you can be a crusader…

First, let me say thank you to all of you that wrote in last week. I was moved by the
overwhelming show of support for integrity in network marketing.

I promised that this week I would give some thoughts on what being a crusader means.

Before I do that, let’s talk about what a crusader isn’t.

A crusader isn’t someone with a chip on his or her shoulder. It’s not someone wanting to
take network marketing down or watch companies go down in flames.

Crusaders believe that network marketing is worthwhile – an honorable way to allow people to participate in the entrepreneurial dream. Most would not be able to participate
in a traditional business because of the costs involved.

Crusaders defend their companies and their industry from unjustified attacks from the
outside… and yes from within. Because the reality is that today’s biggest lie isn’t that
network marketing can make you rich quick (though that’s still a lie) but rather that network marketing can be built like any other business.

As a result the average network marketer spends over $2000 in their first six months in
business yet sponsors less than one person.

So what can crusaders do about it?

Step one is to understand the business you are in. Direct marketing expert Michael
Masterson put’s it this way: “So many of the most expensive mistakes first-time
entrepreneurs make are “outsider” mistakes — errors that someone with experience in
the field would not have made.”

That’s where most people in network marketing go wrong too – making “outside”
mistakes. You see, Network marketing is different from traditional businesses. Most of
the money wasted is a direct result of wanting to engage in types of marketing that don’t
fit the natural network marketing business model.

A great example of this are all those ads telling you need to get as many people as quickly as possible in order to be successful. Funny how those guys never seem to last very long…

I can tell you right now if you don’t have a 4 year plan for your network marketing
business – starting with simply breaking even, then earning a modest profit and building
from there – you will most likely fail.

As crusaders we need to call BS on those marauders that say otherwise.

This doesn’t mean that finding the liars and cheats should become your new business –
on the contrary – it’s something you should be mindful of as you go about prospecting
and interacting with others in this industry.

If you come across someone in your company making misleading claims, notify your company. Your company can’t possibly monitor every distributor. You can help them by
being their eyes and ears. Because from now on the FTC can take action against your
company for what distributors say… that affects you directly.

If you run across grossly misleading promotions from others in this industry take 2 minutes to report them the FTC (www.ftc.gov). Mind you that the FTC doesn’t have the
resources to go after each individual marketer (which is why they go after companies)
but as I proved with last weeks example they will go after the big fish and those that are the worst offenders.

This week we published a full disclosure statement on our site outlining the new FTC rules and how we not only comply (always have) but that we agree with them. You can see them HERE.

Insist that the companies you represent make a similar commitment to integrity.

Next week, I’ll share how network marketing is different from other traditional businesses and why those differences make all the differences in what works and what doesn’t when
it comes to building it.

Back in the day, I would have NEVER admitted to this, let alone write a PUBLIC blog post about it.

But since I understand EGO and losing it for the sake of myself and those around me…

I know this will not only help you in building your Network Marketing business, it will prove to you that mistakes are made no matter how long you’ve been in the industry and they can always provide a learning experience.  (Even if it is at my expense…LOL)

So here’s the deal…

If you’ve been in the industry any time at all, you know The One Basic Element You Need To Start Making Money In A Network Marketing Home Business is PEOPLE TO TALK TO!

And I’m sure you also know that there is a certain level of skill required to do that.

Well I know that too.  But based on my performance the other night when I was returning a call to a lead.

I made the BIGGEST FOOL out of myself EVER.

I swear, it was almost like I had NEVER EVER EVER picked up the phone before and called a lead, let alone sponsor anyone.   (Thank goodness I have documented proof…LOL)

In fact I told one of my very close friends and colleagues, “OMG… I just called a lead and it was the most STUPID EFFIN CALL I EVER MADE… You would have thought I never spoke to a SOUL in my life!”

I’m not going to get into all the GRUESOME details, let’s just say, I reverted back to my old days of TELLING and SELLING.

(Thank you Andre Vatke for teaching me the Consultative Approach, even though I had a complete BRAIN FART the other night!)

Check this out… at one point I was so FLABBERGASTED with myself…

I actually told the poor woman that if she wanted to… she could simply HANG UP ON ME.  I also told her that if there was a ROCK in my OFFICE I would CRAWL under it.

(She probably thought I was a TOTAL NUTCASE but the fact of the matter is… she was very GRACIOUS and KIND)

I mean come on… who says that SH!T?  (Apparently, I do… LOL!)

Anyway… I will quit BLABBING now… anything passed what I’ve already revealed would just be some sort of relief or penance for my SIN (giggle)…

The bottom line is… I hope this FIASCO I just shared with you helps you realize…

It’s all good… we are all human… and mistakes are going to be made.

The thing that’s cool, is that… we have a CHOICE to either LEARN from our MISTAKES and GROW…

OR BLAME someone for our MISTAKES and stay MEDIOCRE.

I choose the FORMER…

And Louisa… if you’re reading this post… I apologize from the bottom of my heart for being such a MORON on the telephone… LOL… It’s REALLY not who I am… (and please don’t blackmail me)

The Internet has been both a blessing and a curse for Network Marketers.

A blessing because we can get good information within seconds.

A curse because we can get bad information within seconds.

I made this video to share my experience in hopes of it saving you TIME, MONEY and FRUSTRATION.

So if you’re not achieving the success you desire with your Network Marketing business, all is not lost.

There are very reputable people and programs available today.  And for the record, they do not cost THOUSANDS of DOLLARS.

Just make sure, like I suggested, to request documentation of WHO has graduated from the program and HOW the program is taught.  There should be no reason this shouldn’t be provided upon request and if it can’t, then that is a HUGE RED FLAG!

I don’t normally (in fact I don’t think I ever have, scratching head) put another piece of content on my blog that wasn’t personally written by me.

But because I found this message so POWERFUL and one that needs to be heard by many, I decided to share it with my audience and you can read it right below…

So without further ado…

Are You A Crusader Or A Marauder?

A few years ago a man was heralded as creating a revolution in network marketing. His ads were in major magazines, being mailed via direct mail and even heard on radio around the US.

Hundreds of thousands of people eager to be star network marketers joined the company he promoted and flocked to his “marketing” seminars. There were a lot of testimonials of people who were getting rich and living the life featured in a network marketing company promo videos.

If I stop the story there, as most promo’s do, you wouldn’t have the complete story. In fact, you would be missing the very part that could help you improve your odds of success.

Not too long after reaching this pinnacle, complaints started to circulate about this marketing guru and the company he promoted. It turned out that people didn’t find what they were promised. In fact, as often happens in these cases, the more people that got involved the less successful it was for everyone except those running it.

Soon, the FTC got involved and started to investigate for fraud. The network marketing company blamed the marketer saying he had become a renegade, while the marketer blamed the company saying they didn’t deliver on what he was told to promise.

There was a mass exodus from the company (Nutrition For Life) and it was eventually forced out of business. There were fines by the FTC and there was a lot of finger pointing… but the real victims were the approximately 300,000 people duped into joining a marketing system under false pretenses and placed on autoship before they really knew what they were getting involved with.

That notorious marketer, Kevin Trudeau, got jail time for contempt of court after inciting his followers to flood the email inbox of the judge. He’s had a long history with defrauding the public. He’s spent several years in federal prison and had previously a high value home and 2 luxury cars as a judgment against him. This time he looses the $50,000 in bail he posted.

But that’s small change considering the $37 MILLION he was fined by the FTC for deceptive practices in advertising his information and health products.

While the big fish sometimes get gutted, there are still many more predators large and small that manipulate the innocent for their own gain. There are guru’s out there (I have talked to them personally) that consciously deceive the public because it’s simply an easy way for them to make a lot of money. They know that telling people what they want to hear is often more profitable than telling them the truth.

But not everyone is a predator… it’s time to stand up for integrity in network marketing.

It’s time for those who are serious about network marketing to become crusaders for our industry. Crusaders reject all tactics related to manipulation, deception, or dishonesty.

We reject the use of hype and unusual earning claims in advertising and we’re ready to protect this industry from the marauders and renegades that seek personal gain above anything else.

We acknowledge that unethical marketing tactics based on deception and dishonesty create a backlash and damage the reputation of the fine companies we represent and our entire industry. If we want our companies to stay in business and our industry to thrive, we need to be crusaders, not marauders.

As both a home and small business owner myself, I have learned to make it a point to ‘delight’ my customers.

With that, not only has our retention (repeat business) rate increased but so has our referrals.

So if after watching this video, you feel that you need to start ‘delighting’ your customers too…

You are very smart because statistics show that with a few simple thank you notes in a period of a year, can increase your business retention and referrals by 17%.

And on a not so happy note…

Statistics show that “for every month you don’t communicate with your customers, you lose 10% of your influence” and in this economy, that opens the door for your competition to step in.  Not an ideal situation to put yourself in.

Like I said in my video, “step it up a few notches, and separate yourself from the crowd”… You will glad you did…:)

I had to LAUGH when I read it because back then my copy skills were, let’s just say, LACKING…LOL

I was completely frustrated with my network marketing business and…

I was a virtual NOBODY in the online world.

Yet I stayed the course and after going full circle through the school of hard knocks…
