People Buy Stories

A few years ago I worked closely with what some consider a “prominent” Internet marketer.

I will NEVER forget the day she told me, “It’s all a story. People think they know me but they haven’t got the slightest clue about me. It’s an act. So & So (no need to use real name) knows the most about me but even she doesn’t know  my whole story.”

(and for the record, So & So is no where to be found. I think she even got turned off by the “prominent” Internet marketer and cut ties)

Anyway, not only did this make me cringe. It made me feel very betrayed because what I thought was the truth via her words…was just a fabricated story for her personal gain.

BUT the good news is, it was a HUGE lesson for me both personally and professionally.

My point in telling you this?

Because people buy stories NOT your product or service.

And in my opinion, it’s OK to tell them a story as long as it won’t hurt your consumer and it’s authentic.

The “prominent” Internet marketer on the other hand…

Well, she’s brought life to what Seth Godin writes about…

“A fraud, on the other hand, is a story based on little or nothing.  It’s a story you tell primarily for personal gain. And worst of all, a fraud, when discovered (and it will be discovered), enrages your consumer—probably forever.”

And trust me my friends…

Being a “fraud” may have its perks initially BUT once word starts to “spread like wildfire on a hot summer day” from the “enraged consumer”— you might as well kiss you’re career goodbye because no one likes a FRAUD.  (I mean just look at what happened to Bernie Madoff!)

So at the end of the day… share your story because people love them!

Just make sure your story is AUTHENTIC and your WORDS match your ACTIONS.

    Maybe there are lots of these prominent marketers doing the rounds, because I had a similar experience.

    I remember once that a ‘prominent’ marketer (with whom I have NO connection or association since I saw behind the curtain and threw up a little in my mouth) told me some of the most disgusting ways to make money from people. This person was really pleased with themselves when they showed me the true nature of how they worked. Again, it wasn’t shown on the surface.

    Certain marketers make a lot of money out of people by keeping them in follower mode. People even argue for the right to stay there, even if they see others being hurt. You’d think people’s ethics were stronger than that, but I guess there’s a lot of fear out there, and that’s how these unethical gurus make their profits. They’re like in Harry Potter. Those ‘Dementors’. They see into the souls of the lost and pull out their pain. They speak doubt into people until they’re incapable of independent thought. They create home business zombies:

They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them… Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. If it can, the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself…soulless and evil. You will be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life.”
