Let’s face it, it’s easier than ever to get a web site online.
But if you build it, will they come?
A recent college graduate friend of mine recently sat down with me to tell me about his newest business plan.
“I made a $400 profit my first month,” he told me, “and I didn’t really do anything.”
“OK,” I thought. “Tell me about it.”
He told me that he had purchased the latest eBook that showed him exactly how to squeeze money from Google advertising. And as his profits indicated, it clearly worked. In fact, he had already written a testimonial for the author of the eBook he paid $70 for.
So, I asked him what he did to earn his $400…
He told me that he had put up a website, written some articles on various topics and got himself an AdSense account. He placed the Google ads on is pages and was pocketing close to $1 for every ad his readers clicked on.
“Great, so what are you doing to get your own traffic?”
He told me that he was already ranked number one for certain keywords in Google.
Knowing a bit on how Google ranks and lists sites and that they don’t rank anyone quickly, I pressed him for the keywords he was ranking on.
Turns out it was his own name. Not that impressive but he assured me that the rest would come over time and his profits would only increase.
Plus, he had one more trick up his sleeve…
In the eBook he bought he learned that the “trick” to making the whole system work was to buy ads on the second and third tier PPC engines like 7Search and MIVA. These were often available for less than 15 cents a click. Converting 1 out of 4 netted an easy 40 cent profit or more. It seemed to be foolproof.
Then I asked him a simple yet critical question…
What is Google’s motive behind their search engine and PPC efforts?
He thought about it for a minute or two and said correctly that it was to help readers find information they were looking for. I then explained that every time someone has come up with a way to manipulate Google in some way, Google has found a way to kill it.
In the end, Google wants to provide their visitors with real content – period. If you are doing anything other than that it’s only a matter of time before you pay the price of being de-ranked or banned altogether.
The very next week, he found his ads had been shut down by Google. He was not only out of business but left holding the bill for his traffic generating ads on the other networks.
There’s no shortage of people who will promise you quick and easy success online if (and only if) you buy their eBook or boiler plate web site. Before you think I’m here to talk you out of starting a web site, let me be real frank – there is still a ton of opportunity online.
The problem is that too many innocent people have jumped into one of the 1,000’s of companies or systems out there, only to crash and burn. There are a lot of tempting offers for special one-time deals, discount memberships, turnkey systems, etc that do all the work for you with little or no initial expenditure on your part. But what 99% of them ignore is the fact that building a successful business takes commitment, skill and good old fashioned hard work.
Those who make it, know it’s 110% worth it!
Those who don’t are the ones who continue to burn their money chasing what sounds too good to be true. Most people know that when something sounds too good to be true, it’s not true.
