“Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda

Star Wars and Yoda must be on the mind of a few people this week.

I saw that my friend, Jackie Ulmer, had posted his picture on her Facebook wall with his infamous quote…

And my friend, Freddy Rodriguez, wrote a blog post on it.

So I figured, what the heck?

I might as well get in on the action because I have a good story to tell.

About a month ago… we got a new boat.  And this boat is 25ft. long.

Our old boat was only 21ft. and I had become quite good at driving it.

Anyway… if you know anything about boats (and even if you don’t) 4ft. makes a HUGE difference.

So here’s my story…

The other weekend on our 25ft. boat…

I found myself in a very peculiar parking situation (on the water) and had to get the boat maneuvered perfectly (and I do stress perfectly) into a gas dock because if I didn’t…

Well, let’s just put it this way… it wouldn’t have been pretty.

To make matters more intense I had my three kids on board with me…

So I said out loud, “OK… let me “try” this.”

And the second those words came out of my lips… I caught myself and I immediately said,

“SCRATCH that… let me DO THIS.”

Guess what?  Not only did I DO IT… I nailed it!

But the best part is…

I gave my kids the lesson of a lifetime because all three were watching and listening to me!

“Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda

So what is it that YOU have been “trying” to do but have yet to accomplish?

Have you been “trying” to build a network marketing business?

Have you been “trying” to lose weight?

Have you been “trying” to find more time in your day?

Have you been “trying” to make more money?

Have you been “trying” to get out of the job you hate?

Have you been “trying” to save for your future?

Well… all I can say is good luck to you…

Because until YOU make the DECISION to DO…

Unfortunately YOU will remain “trying” the rest of your life and…

Shit Howdy… that’s going to SUCK!

So… go out and DO something today instead of remain in perpetual “try” mode…

Not only does it feel good BUT it will release you from the bondage of not DOING:)

Until next time…

Nothing but LOVE & FUN + DOWN & DIRTY!

We have to be on guard to not let doubt come into our minds.

When we say “try” we are doubting are ability to accomplish something.

It is a word I keep in check!!

      Ohhhh… I love what you said Alice…

“When we say “try” we are doubting are ability to accomplish something.”

      …because that is SO TRUE!

    • Pete Ross says:

That’s right, Alice. There’s a big difference when we say “I can do this” than saying “I will try doing this”. These questions are great. You can’t always say “Try”. Thanks for sharing it, Shelly.

    Hi Shelly,

I like your post. It’s very powerful and was fun to read! Trying does not work and as long as you use that word, you will fail. It doesn’t matter what you are planning to do, “try” will sabotage your efforts.

I attended a seminar that showed a demonstration of what happens when we think “try.” A person (A) is asked to form a circle by touching their thumb and second finger together. They are asked a question with a scripted answer using the word “try.” Another person (B) attempts to pry their fingers apart. Every time the “try” script was used their fingers were easily pulled apart by the other person. The other script used the words “I do” and no matter how hard person (B) attempted to pry their fingers, they couldn’t. It was quite amazing. It showed how powerful our thoughts are and they make a difference between success and failure.

Hooray for you for setting a great example for you kidlets. I hope you enjoy your boat!

      Interesting demonstration!!!

Just goes to show the POWER of WORDS:)

      Thanks for stopping by Raena…

    Hello Shelly,

I love how you define the word “try”. Yea, I totally agree that we should not live up to the “try” world. We need to use the word “Do” to be able to accomplish something.

Thank you for sharing this great article. A very nice quote from Yoda. It’s very short but has a very deep meaning.

  5. I Love It! Thanks for the mention Shelly. 🙂

“So… go out and DO something today instead of remain in perpetual “try” mode…”

I love it when I hear people that have the “Get ‘er done!” attitude. Is there technically a “try”? Of course, there is. We can’t make it disappear from the dictionary.

    But…

Many people use “try” to give themselves a way out in case things don’t go according to plan. If you want to be successful…don’t “try” your best…DO YOUR BEST.

      Yep…

And I have taught my kids…

No matter what it is you are DOING… always DO YOUR BEST because that way YOU can NEVER go wrong even if it doesn’t completely turn out as planned:)

And you are welcome for the mention… 🙂

    Hi Shelly,
This is really nice. I heard myself changing all the “try” in to “do”. A lot more is achieved if we do instead of try. Your kids, I’m sure have learnt a great lesson and are sure proud of their mum.

You hit the nail right on with this post, Shelly. Its a valuable lesson for not ONLY your children to learn, but many of us. I have to admit, there have been things I’ve been trying that I need to just do or do not. 😉
